Qualitative and Quantitative Data

Eye colour or eye-test score: the same eye, two different kinds of data. Which averages each one allows, and why a number can still be qualitative.

Qualitative and quantitative data

Qualitative data describes a quality in words or categories, while quantitative data records a quantity as a number that has been counted or measured.

مختصر جواب

Qualitative data describes something in words or categories, like eye colour. Quantitative data records it as a number you counted or measured, like a score on an eye test. The distinction matters because you can find the mode of eye colour but never the mean.

ایک مثال

Eye colour: brown, blue, green | Eye test score: 6/6, 6/9, 6/18

Both come from looking at the same eye. One records what it is like and the other records how well it performs, and that difference decides everything you may do afterwards. You can say brown is the most common eye colour in the class. You cannot say the average eye colour, because there is no arithmetic that turns brown and blue into a third thing.

The difference is in what you recorded

It is tempting to think some things in the world are qualitative and others are quantitative. They are not. The split is in the record you made, not in the object you looked at.

A shirt can give you a colour (qualitative), a chest measurement in centimetres (quantitative), or a size label of S, M or L, which is a category with an order but no arithmetic. Ask what was written down and the classification answers itself.

Which averages survive the change

This is where the label earns its keep. The mode needs only counting, so it works for anything: the most common eye colour, the most common shoe size. The median needs the values to be orderable, so it works for quantitative data and for categories that have a natural order — S, M, L, or strongly disagree through to strongly agree. The mean needs the gaps between values to be equal in size, so it works for quantitative data alone.

The consequence is worth stating plainly. Averaging school grades by scoring A as 1, B as 2 and C as 3 quietly assumes that the distance from A to B is the same as the distance from B to C. Nothing about grading guarantees that, which is why an average grade is a shakier number than it looks.

  • Mode — available for qualitative and quantitative data alike
  • Median — needs an order, so it works for quantitative data and for ordered categories
  • Mean — needs equal spacing between values, so it needs genuine quantities
  • Range and interquartile range — quantitative only, since both are subtractions

Numbers that are not quantitative

A digit on a page does not make data quantitative. Football shirt numbers, bus route numbers, house numbers and survey codes such as 1 for male and 2 for female are all labels that happen to be written as numerals.

The test is whether arithmetic on the values means anything. The mean of the shirt numbers on a team sheet can be calculated and tells you nothing, because 10 is not twice 5 in any sense that concerns football. When a question asks you to comment on a calculation like that, saying the values are qualitative despite being numbers is the whole answer.

عام سوالات

Is eye colour qualitative or quantitative?

Qualitative. It is recorded as a category — brown, blue, green, hazel — and the categories have no order and no spacing. You can count how many fall in each, so the mode exists, and you can draw a bar chart or pie chart, but no arithmetic on the colours themselves is meaningful.

Can you find the mean of qualitative data?

No. The mean requires adding the values and dividing, and there is no sum of brown and blue. You can find the mean of something counted about qualitative data — the average number of brown-eyed students per class across ten classes — but that is a count, and counts are quantitative.

What is the difference between qualitative and discrete data?

They sit at different levels. Data first splits into qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative data then splits again into discrete and continuous. So the number of siblings is quantitative and discrete, height is quantitative and continuous, and eye colour is qualitative and belongs to neither of those two.

Is a rating out of 5 in a survey qualitative or quantitative?

It is an ordered category, which sits between the two. Schools and most survey work treat it as quantitative and take a mean, which assumes the step from 1 to 2 matches the step from 4 to 5. That assumption is convenient rather than true, and the median is the safer summary.
