Chronology: Putting Events in the Order They Happened
Chronology is the order events happened in, and the dating system that fixes it. Why BC counts backwards, why there is no year zero, how centuries are numbered.
Chronology
Chronology is the ordering of events by the time at which they occurred, together with the system of dates used to fix them.

مختصر جواب
Chronology is the arrangement of events in the order they happened, together with the dating system that makes that order checkable. In history it means more than listing dates: it means knowing that 500 BC is earlier than 200 BC, that the 1900s are the twentieth century, and what came before what.
ایک مثال
44 BC → AD 79 → 1066 → 1947
Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC; Vesuvius buried Pompeii in AD 79; the Battle of Hastings was fought in 1066; Pakistan and India became independent in 1947. Reading left to right is reading forwards in time, and the gaps are as informative as the dates: a little over a century separates the first two, nearly a thousand years separates the next pair. A timeline drawn with the events evenly spaced hides exactly the thing the timeline was for.
BC counts down, AD counts up
BC years run towards the year 1 and then AD years run away from it, so with BC dates the bigger number is the earlier date. 500 BC is three hundred years before 200 BC. This single reversal accounts for most of the mistakes made with ancient dates, and the fix is to picture the number line rather than the number.
There is also no year zero: 1 BC is followed directly by AD 1. So somebody born in 50 BC who died in AD 10 lived fifty-nine years, not sixty. By convention AD is written before the year and BC after it — AD 79, but 44 BC. BCE and CE mean precisely the same years counted precisely the same way, under names that do not depend on a particular religion.
Why 1947 is in the twentieth century
A century number is always one more than the hundreds digit, because the first century ran from AD 1 to AD 100. So 1066 falls in the eleventh century, 1789 in the eighteenth, 1947 in the twentieth and 2026 in the twenty-first. The mismatch feels wrong every time, and it is not an error.
Centuries BC run backwards in the same way: the fifth century BC covers 500 BC to 401 BC, and its later years are the smaller numbers. Related vocabulary follows the same scale — a decade is ten years, a century a hundred, a millennium a thousand.
One century on a line, and why the gaps matter
Take seven events from the twentieth century and put them in order. The dates themselves are the easy part and the least valuable.
What the line shows that the list does not is the intervals. Only twenty-one years separate the end of the First World War from the outbreak of the Second — meaning many of the men who fought in 1918 watched their sons called up in 1939. That interval is the fact that explains something. A date on its own explains nothing at all, which is why chronology is taught as a skill rather than as a memory test.
- 1914 — outbreak of the First World War
- 1918 — the armistice ends it
- 1939 — outbreak of the Second World War
- 1945 — the Second World War ends
- 1947 — Pakistan and India become independent
- 1969 — the first Moon landing
- 1989 — the Berlin Wall is opened
عام سوالات
Which is earlier, 500 BC or 200 BC?
500 BC, by three hundred years. BC dates count down towards the year 1, so the larger the BC number, the further back in time it is. It is the opposite of the habit built up by every AD date you have ever met, which is precisely why it needs deliberate practice rather than a rule to recite.
Is there a year zero?
Not in the BC/AD system. The year 1 BC is followed immediately by AD 1. This is why calculating a span across the divide needs care: from 50 BC to AD 10 is fifty-nine years, not sixty. Astronomers use a different numbering that does include a year zero, which is one reason ancient dates sometimes differ by one between sources.
What is the difference between BC/AD and BCE/CE?
Only the names. AD 79 and 79 CE are the same year, and 44 BC and 44 BCE are the same year. BCE and CE stand for Before Common Era and Common Era, and are used to avoid dating the world by a religious reference point. Whichever your syllabus uses, be consistent within a piece of work.
Why do Islamic dates not line up with Gregorian ones?
The Hijri calendar counts from the year of the Hijra, 622 CE, and its year is lunar — about eleven days shorter than the solar year the Gregorian calendar uses. The two drift steadily against each other, so a Hijri year does not correspond to one particular Gregorian year, and Ramadan moves through the seasons.
Why does chronology matter if I already know the facts?
Because causation only runs forwards. You cannot argue that one event caused another if the second happened first, and that is the most common way a source answer collapses. Getting the order right is not a preliminary to historical argument; it is what makes the argument possible.
