What Comes After IGCSE Maths?

The line that settles the first route

Cambridge's AS and A Level Mathematics syllabus states its prior knowledge in one sentence: knowledge of the content of Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended, or Cambridge International O Level 4024/4029, is assumed.

Read that as an instruction rather than a suggestion. Paper 1 opens on quadratics, functions, coordinate geometry and trigonometry, all treated as tools already in hand. A student who sat the Core route has not met several of them, and the course will not stop to teach them.

This is not a verdict on whether a Core candidate can do A Level Mathematics. Plenty can. It is a statement about when the extra work happens: deliberately, in the months before the course, or painfully, in October when everyone else is already moving.

A Level Mathematics: the combination that traps people

Cambridge A Level Mathematics is four components. Everyone takes Paper 1 Pure Mathematics 1 and Paper 3 Pure Mathematics 3. Then either Paper 4 Mechanics with Paper 5 Probability & Statistics 1, or Paper 5 with Paper 6 Probability & Statistics 2. Paper 4 and Paper 6 cannot be combined, because Paper 6 depends on Paper 5.

AS Level is two components, and here is the part worth reading twice. Paper 1 can be paired with Paper 2 Pure Mathematics 2, with Paper 4, or with Paper 5. But the pure-only route — Papers 1 and 2 — is available at AS Level only and cannot be carried forward to complete the A Level.

It is the route that looks safest to a student who prefers pure mathematics, and it is the one that dead-ends. If the A Level is the destination, the AS year has to be Paper 1 with Paper 4 or Paper 5. Further Mathematics, if it is in view, sits on top of the A Level rather than beside it.

IB mathematics is two subjects, not two tiers

The IB Diploma offers Mathematics: analysis and approaches and Mathematics: applications and interpretation, each at standard and higher level. They are different courses with different emphases — one built around proof and algebraic argument, the other around modelling and interpreting data — not an easier and a harder version of one syllabus.

That matters at the point of application. Degree courses that require higher level mathematics frequently name which of the two they mean, and a student who chose on the basis of enjoyment in Year 11 can find the wrong one on their transcript in Year 13.

The national and American routes

Inside Pakistan, the Intermediate — FSc pre-engineering or pre-medical, or ICS — is the mainstream continuation, with the IBCC handling equivalence between the international and national systems. It is the right route for a student whose destination is a Pakistani university, and it is chosen far more often on cost and proximity than the international-school conversation admits.

In a US-pattern school, IGCSE is followed by Grades 11 and 12, typically Precalculus and then AP Calculus AB or BC. This is the route to plan for if the destination is a US university, because it produces the four-year transcript those applications assume.

None of these is a lesser option. They are answers to different questions about where the student is going, and the mistake is picking one for reasons of prestige rather than direction.

What to do in the months between

IGCSE results for the June series arrive in August, and courses start in August or September. The useful window is therefore the summer before results, not the fortnight after them — which is why the work has to be planned in June rather than considered in late August.

For a student heading to A Level Mathematics from Core, or from Extended with a modest grade, the list is short and specific.

• Expanding and factorising quadratics, including where the coefficient of x squared is not 1
• The quadratic formula, the discriminant, and completing the square
• Index laws with negative and fractional indices, and surds
• Rearranging formulae where the subject appears more than once
• Simultaneous equations, including one linear and one quadratic
• Straight-line geometry: gradients, midpoints, parallel and perpendicular lines
• The sine rule, the cosine rule, and exact values for common angles
