How Many Questions Are on the Digital SAT?

Ninety-eight questions across four modules

The test is two sections of two modules each, and the split is even within a section. Reading and Writing gives you 27 questions twice; Math gives you 22 questions twice.

Every Reading and Writing question sits with its own short passage, so 27 questions means 27 separate pieces of reading rather than a handful of long texts with clusters of questions hanging off them. That is the structural change most worth knowing about if your practice material predates the digital test.

The eight questions that do not count

Two questions in each of the four modules are pretest items. College Board uses them to trial questions for future test forms, and they are excluded from your score. That leaves 50 scored Reading and Writing questions and 40 scored Math questions — 90 in total.

You cannot identify them. They are mixed into the module, they look exactly like everything else, and there is no marking, wording or position that gives them away. The only sane response is to answer all 98 as though all 98 matter.

It does explain one thing students notice: a question that seems oddly phrased, or unlike anything in the practice material, is more likely to be a trial question than a sign that you have missed something on the syllabus.

The number that actually governs test day

Convert the counts into seconds and the test stops being abstract. Reading and Writing gives 1,920 seconds for 27 questions — about 71 seconds each, and that includes reading the passage. Math gives 2,100 seconds for 22 questions, about 95 seconds each.

Those averages are the pacing target, not a rule for every question. In Math, the short algebra questions should take well under 95 seconds precisely so that the two or three geometry or modelling questions can take well over it.

The practical drill is not to answer faster. It is to know, at roughly the halfway point of a module, how many questions you should have behind you: fourteen of the 27, eleven of the 22. A student who checks once, at the midpoint, recovers a slow start. A student who checks the clock every question loses more time than they save.

Why the second module is not the same test for everyone

The digital SAT is adaptive by module. Your performance on the first module of a section determines the difficulty of the second. The number of questions does not change, and neither does the time.

Two things follow. First, the first module carries more weight than its question count suggests, because it decides the range of scores still available to you. Second, guessing from the difficulty of your second module about how the first went is a way to spend the break upset, and it is not reliable.

It also means raw-score-to-scaled-score charts copied from the paper SAT do not transfer. College Board does not publish a fixed conversion, because there is no single form to publish one for.
