Why no table exists, and why that is not an oversight
A GPA is an average of coursework grades earned across four years of high school, weighted by the credit hours attached to each course. An IGCSE grade is the result of an external examination in one subject, usually taken at the end of Year 11, with no credit hours attached to it at all.
There is nothing in an IGCSE certificate to average and nothing to weight. Two students with identical certificates may have taken six subjects or eleven, over one year or two, at schools with entirely different teaching loads. A conversion table would have to invent the missing information, which is precisely why no awarding body publishes one.
What actually reaches the admissions office
Two documents do the work. The first is your school's transcript, which records the courses you took and the marks the school gave you — not your IGCSE grades, but the internal grades that ran alongside them. The second is the school profile, which explains the school's grading system, its curriculum and whether it calculates a GPA at all.
The application then asks your counsellor to state a cumulative GPA and the scale it sits on. A school that does not calculate one says so, and that answer is normal enough that it carries no penalty. What causes problems is a student producing a GPA the school cannot corroborate.
What a credential evaluator actually does
Where a university wants a formal equivalence it names an agency. World Education Services, the most widely used in North America, produces a course-by-course report that lists subjects with US semester credit and grade equivalents and calculates a GPA on a 4.0 scale that, in its own words, takes account of differences between education systems.
The important detail is what that report is built from: post-secondary study. A secondary school certificate is a different kind of document, and evaluations of it typically establish what level of schooling it represents rather than producing a grade point average. If a university has asked you for an evaluation, ask which report type it wants before paying for the wrong one.
Why any letter map flattens the thing it is trying to measure
Look at what the grades actually distinguish. In June 2025, across all IGCSE Mathematics entries worldwide, 19.8% were awarded A* and 34.1% were awarded A or above. A table that maps both A* and A to 4.0 puts a third of the world's candidates on a single point and throws away the distinction the qualification exists to make.
The distortion runs the other way at the bottom. A Core entry cannot be awarded above a grade C, so a Core candidate's converted GPA is capped by an entry decision made years earlier by a school, not by anything the student did in the exam. No conversion table has a column for that.
The three steps that actually resolve it
First, ask your school what it puts on the transcript and whether it reports a GPA. That single question answers the original one for most students. Second, read the international applicants page of each university on your list; where a conversion or an evaluation is required, they say so and name the agency. Third, send the IGCSE statement of results as issued.
What we advise against is arithmetic done at home. A self-calculated GPA that does not match the school's transcript is an inconsistency in an application, and the grades you actually hold are stronger evidence than any number you derive from them.

Is an A* a 4.0?
Under most informal tables, yes — and so is an A, which is what should make you cautious about the tables. There is no published equivalence behind either claim. If a university wants a 4.0-scale figure, it will either take your school's transcript GPA or name an evaluating agency, and that agency's answer is the one that counts.
Do US universities understand IGCSE grades?
Admissions offices that receive international applications regularly read them without translation, which is the case for reading them in context rather than converting them. This is also why the school profile matters: it tells the reader what the qualification is and how your school uses it.
Should I calculate my own GPA to put on an application?
Only if the application demands a number, gives you no way to explain, and your school cannot supply one. Even then, say in the additional information section how you derived it. An unexplained number that contradicts your transcript is worse than a blank field with a note.
What if my school does not issue a GPA at all?
Say so on the form — the option exists precisely because most of the world does not use GPAs. Your counsellor reports the grading system the school does use, the profile explains it, and the university reads your results on their own terms. Nothing is lost by not having a figure that your education system never produced.
