Why a GCSE requirement exists at all

A university makes its offer on A levels or their equivalent, so the GCSE line can look like a formality. It is not. It is doing a specific job: confirming basic numeracy for courses that will assume it — statistics in psychology, dosage calculations in nursing, quantitative methods in economics and geography — where the A levels held may contain no mathematics at all.

That is why the requirement survives on courses that seem to have nothing to do with maths. An English literature applicant will not use algebra, but the university is checking a floor, not a foundation for the course.

The grades that actually appear in entry requirements

Requirements cluster into a few bands, and it is worth knowing which band a course sits in before results day rather than after.

One warning about how these are written. Older pages and some Scottish universities still express GCSE requirements in letters, so an applicant reads "grade B" and holds a 6. Where a page mixes scales, take the letter as the older wording for the same standard and confirm it if anything turns on the distinction.

• Grade 4 — the common floor across most undergraduate courses, and the level UK universities generally treat as the minimum for numeracy
• Grade 5 or 6 — frequently set by courses with a quantitative element, and by more selective institutions across the board
• Grade 6 or 7 — medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses; UCL's MBBS, for example, requires grade B/6 or above in English Language and Mathematics
• Grade 4 in English, maths and — for primary — science: the requirement for initial teacher training in England, set by the Department for Education rather than by any one provider

What an applicant from outside the UK needs instead

Universities do not require the certificate; they require the standard. An applicant from Pakistan, the Gulf or Malaysia meets a GCSE maths condition with an accepted equivalent — an IGCSE, an O level, a national secondary certificate assessed as comparable, or in some cases a component of the IB Diploma.

The practical difficulty is that admissions pages are written for domestic applicants and often list a grade without listing what satisfies it from abroad. The fix is unglamorous: email the admissions office, name the exact qualification, awarding body and grade, and ask for confirmation in writing before the application goes in. Doing that in September costs nothing; doing it in August costs a place.

If you do not have it, and you are already past school

Adults returning to study meet this constantly, and there are three routes rather than one. Sit GCSE maths as a private candidate in the November or June series. Take an equivalence test where the university or training provider offers one. Or take an Access to Higher Education Diploma, which many universities accept in place of both A levels and some GCSE requirements.

Which route works depends entirely on the destination, and the destination is the thing to ask first.
