The four terms, with the actual dates

South Africa publishes a single national public school calendar, and it is unusually easy to plan against because the government prints two years at a time. Terms are of uneven length: the first and third are long, the second is broken by public holidays, and the fourth is short and dominated by examinations.

These are the published dates for the next two years.

The inland and coastal split, and why it has gone

For years the Department of Basic Education published two calendars. Inland provinces — Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West — reopened in the second week of January, and the coastal provinces — Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Northern Cape — followed in the third. The gap was about a week, and the reasoning had as much to do with holiday traffic on the roads to the coast as with schooling.

That split has been closed. Since 2024 all public schools have opened on the same day, and the 2026 and 2027 calendars keep it that way. If you are reading older guidance that tells you to check whether your province is inland or coastal, it is out of date.

The one place the distinction survives is in the independent sector, where schools set their own dates and a Cape Town private school may still start later than a Johannesburg one.

Where the matric examinations sit

The National Senior Certificate written examinations run from the middle of October to the end of November. In 2026 they were timetabled from 12 October to 27 November — which means they begin in the first week of Term 4 and finish after it has effectively ended for everyone else.

Read that against the term dates above and the shape of a matric year becomes obvious. Teaching has to be finished by the end of Term 3 in September. The preliminary examinations sit in September. Term 4 is not a teaching term for a Grade 12 pupil; it is the examination itself. Results are published in January.

The practical planning point is that a matric student's last chance to learn anything new is the third term. Support booked in October is revision support, and anyone selling it as anything else is selling you something that cannot work.

What a December-ending year means for online classes

South Africa is three hours behind Pakistan and neither country changes its clocks, so the offset never moves. Our weekday window of 14:00–22:00 PKT is 11:00–19:00 in Johannesburg and Cape Town, which covers the whole South African after-school afternoon and evening with room to spare. Of the fourteen countries we teach into, this is one of the two or three least awkward.

The calendar matters more than the clock. A South African family's intensive months are August and September, before the prelims and the finals — not April and May, which is when a tutor's British and Gulf students are peaking. Say which system your child is in when you book, because the two calendars want opposite things at opposite times of year.

When do South African schools close for the summer?

In the second week of December, for roughly five weeks. Because the school year and the calendar year end together, December is both the summer holiday and the end of the academic year, so pupils return in January to a new grade rather than to the second half of the same one.

Do private schools follow the same term dates?

No. Independent schools set their own calendars and commonly start later in January and finish earlier in December than the public system. If you are coordinating tutoring across siblings at different schools, check both calendars rather than assuming the national one applies.

When are matric results released?

In January, a few weeks after the November examinations end. The gap between writing the last paper in late November and receiving a result in January is the longest wait in the South African school system, and it falls entirely inside the summer holiday.

Is the calendar the same in every province?

For public schools, yes. Inland and coastal provinces have opened and closed on the same dates since 2024. Provincial education departments publish their own versions with local detail and provincial public holidays, but the term dates themselves are national. Independent schools remain the exception and set their own.

How many terms are there in a South African school year?
