What a Grade 9 Is in Old GCSE Grades

If you are converting a requirement rather than a result, the useful anchor is grade 4 for an old C, because that is the point Ofqual aligned.

The only three points that were ever aligned

Ofqual describes the relationship in three sentences, and every honest conversion has to start from them. The bottom of a grade 7 is comparable to the bottom of the old grade A. The bottom of a new grade 4 is comparable to the bottom of the old grade C. The bottom of the new grade 1 is comparable to the bottom of the old grade G.

Everything else is a band, not a point. Grades 9, 8 and 7 together cover what used to be A* and A. Grades 6, 5 and 4 cover what used to be B and C. Grades 3, 2 and 1 cover D, E, F and G. Nine grades were mapped onto eight, deliberately, to spread out the top.

Grade 9 is set by a formula, not by a percentage

Ofqual publishes the arithmetic. The share of grade 9s is calculated as: 7% + 0.5 × (percentage of students awarded grade 7 and above). Across all subjects that works out at roughly 20% of the students who reach grade 7 or above going on to a 9.

That construction has a consequence people rarely follow through. The number of grade 9s in a subject depends on how many students reached grade 7 in that subject, so a 9 in a subject where few students reach the top is rarer than a 9 in one where many do. It is a proportion of the strongest group, not a mark.

Ofqual is explicit about the effect: grade 9 is not the same as A*, it was designed to recognise the very highest performing students, and there are fewer grade 9s than there were A*s.

The conversion everyone reaches for is wrong at every point

The instinctive map is 9 to A*, 8 to A, 7 to B, and it fails immediately. Grade 7 is the old A, not the old B. Slide the whole scale down by one and every grade you name is understated by roughly a full grade.

The second instinct — 9 as "A** " — is closer in spirit and still wrong, because it implies the old scale had somewhere for a 9 to sit. It did not. A* was the top of the old scale, and grades 9 and 8 both sit inside it.

What to write when a form asks for old grades

Write the grade you were awarded. A certificate that says 8 says 8, and translating it into a letter on an application is a claim you cannot support if anyone checks.

The one place translation is legitimate is the reverse direction, where an old requirement meets a new certificate. An employer asking for "five A*–C including maths" is asking for five grades 4 and above, because that is the anchor point Ofqual set. If a form leaves no room to explain, put the numerical grade and add the qualification year beside it.

Is a grade 9 better than an A*?

It is rarer. Ofqual's design set out to award fewer 9s than there had been A*s and to use grades 9, 8 and 7 to spread out students who would previously all have received an A* or an A. So a 9 identifies a narrower group than an A* did, which is not quite the same claim as being a harder exam.

Is a grade 8 an A*?

It sits inside the old A* and A band, but no single letter maps to it. The scale was deliberately built so that 9, 8 and 7 share the space that A* and A used to occupy, which means an 8 is a strong result that the old scale had no separate name for.

What is a grade 6 in old money?

It falls inside the old B and C band, which grades 6, 5 and 4 replace. The only fixed point in that region is the bottom of grade 4 matching the bottom of the old C, so a 6 is a good B in feel but there is no official equivalence to quote.

How should I list GCSE grades on a CV?

As they were awarded, with the year. "Maths 8, English Language 7 (2025)" is unambiguous and checkable. Converting them to letters invites the reader to convert them back incorrectly, and anyone hiring in the UK has now been reading numerical grades for the better part of a decade.
