What Is a Good SAT Score for Engineering?
Engineering applicants in the class of 2025 averaged 1077 with 539 on Math. That is the field's floor, not its target, and Math is what gets read first.
Réponse courte
What is a good SAT score for engineering?
Aim for 700 or better on the Math section, which puts you in the top 9% of test takers. For engineering, the Math score carries more weight than the composite.
La réponse en bref
Students in the class of 2025 who named engineering as an intended major averaged 1077 in total, with 539 on Math. That is the floor of the field rather than a target. For selective engineering programmes the Math section is read on its own, and 700 places a candidate in the top 9% of test takers.
Ce qui change la réponse
- Engineering admission at some universities is to the university and at others directly to the engineering school, which is usually the more competitive of the two.
- Where the Math score also determines placement into first-year calculus, a low score costs a semester of credit even after admission.
- A strong A level or IGCSE mathematics record can partly offset a modest Math section score, but rarely at the universities that admit directly to engineering.
- For international applicants the effective bar sits above the published one, because the international places are far fewer.
What engineering applicants actually score
The College Board publishes mean scores by intended major, and the engineering figures surprise most people who expect them to be high. In the class of 2025, the 287,363 students naming engineering averaged 1077 in total — 538 on Reading and Writing and 539 on Math.
Two things follow. The first is that intending to study engineering is not in itself a signal of a strong maths score: the engineering group's Math mean sits only about 30 points above the national mean of 508. The second is that the split is almost perfectly even, which is not what anyone predicts.
Set that against the neighbouring fields and the picture sharpens. This is what it looks like across the quantitative majors:
- Mathematics and Statistics — 1203 total, 591 Reading and Writing, 612 Math
- Computer and Information Sciences — 1130 total, 564 Reading and Writing, 566 Math
- Engineering — 1077 total, 538 Reading and Writing, 539 Math
- Physical Sciences — 1064 total, 539 Reading and Writing, 525 Math
- Engineering Technologies — 1007 total, 503 Reading and Writing, 504 Math
- Architecture — 997 total, 506 Reading and Writing, 492 Math
Why the Math section is read on its own
A composite hides the split, and for engineering the split is the information. A 1300 made of 700 Reading and Writing with 600 Math and a 1300 made of 600 with 700 are read very differently by an engineering admissions committee, even though the number on the report is identical.
There is a second, more concrete reason. At many US universities the Math section score feeds into placement, determining whether a first-year student enters calculus or is routed through a preparatory course first. That is not an admissions judgement, it is a scheduling one, and it can cost a semester and its fees.
So the working target for an engineering applicant is a Math score, not a total. Get the Math section where it needs to be and the composite tends to look after itself.
Above the benchmark, and then well above it
The College Board sets its college readiness benchmark for Math at 530, which represents a 75% likelihood of a C or higher in a related first-semester credit-bearing course. That is a readiness threshold, not a competitive one, and 41% of the class of 2025 met it.
For engineering, the useful markers sit above it. In the class of 2025, roughly a quarter of all test takers scored 600 or above on Math, and 9% scored 700 or above. A student with 700 is therefore in a small group nationally, and that is the level at which the Math score stops being the weak part of an engineering application.
Between 530 and 700 there is a lot of ground, and it is mostly ordinary syllabus mathematics done accurately at speed rather than anything exotic.
Closing a Math gap that is worth closing
The Math section is not a test of advanced mathematics. For a student who has worked through GCSE or IGCSE Higher mathematics, very little of the content is new — algebra, linear and quadratic relationships, ratio and proportion, some geometry and trigonometry, and a modest amount of statistics. The difficulty is in the pace and the phrasing.
That means the fastest route from a mid-500s Math score upwards is almost never learning new topics. It is closing the gap between knowing a method and executing it inside about a minute, on a question worded to obscure which method applies. The work is timed sets on identified weak question types, reviewed by cause rather than by score.
Our SAT preparation runs alongside the GCSE and IGCSE mathematics we already teach, which is the same content approached differently. We say plainly where a student's realistic ceiling sits for the time available, because a student targeting 700 from 520 in eight weeks is planning something that does not happen.

Questions fréquentes
Is 1400 a good SAT score for engineering?
It is well above the engineering applicant average of 1077, so yes for most engineering programmes. Whether it is enough for a specific one depends on how the 1400 splits: with 750 on Math it is a strong engineering profile, while with 620 on Math it is a strong general profile applying to a quantitative course.
Do engineering schools look at the Math score separately?
Frequently, yes — and at universities where you apply directly to the engineering school rather than to the university at large, it is usually the section that carries most weight. Many also use it for placement into first-year mathematics, which affects the timetable regardless of the admission decision.
What SAT Math score do I need for computer science instead?
Higher on average than engineering. Students naming computer and information sciences averaged 1130 with 566 on Math in the class of 2025, against engineering's 1077 and 539. Computer science has become one of the most oversubscribed courses in US universities, and the score profile of its applicants reflects that.
Does A level or IGCSE Further Mathematics help my engineering application?
Yes, as part of the academic record — a strong mathematics qualification is direct evidence of exactly what an engineering course wants. It does not replace a Math section score where one is required, but it does give a low score more context than it would otherwise have.
Is the SAT Math section harder than IGCSE Higher mathematics?
In content, no — most of it sits inside what an IGCSE Higher candidate has already covered. In conditions, yes. The questions come faster, are worded to hide the method, and give no credit for working. Students who find it hard usually find the format hard, not the mathematics.
