Is Online Tutoring Good for Homeschooled Students?

The job is not the same job

For a schooled student, a tutor fills the gaps a class left behind. There is a syllabus, a teacher, a scheme of work and a set of marked books, and the tutor works in the space between them. For a homeschooled student none of that exists, so the tutor either owns the subject or nobody does.

That changes what you should ask for. Not 'can you help with maths' but 'what will be covered, in what order, and how will we know it worked'. A tutor who arrives each week and answers whatever questions came up is running a help desk, which is a reasonable service for a schooled student and is not enough here.

The second thing that changes is assessment. A homeschooled student can be well ahead or well behind their family's own estimate, and nobody outside will have said so. An external standard, applied regularly, is worth more than the teaching in the first term.

The slots nobody else can use

Our classes run 14:00–22:00 PKT on weekdays and 10:00–20:00 PKT at weekends. For a schooled student abroad, only the tail of that is usable — a child in London cannot take a class at 15:00 PKT because it is 10:00 in the morning and they are in a classroom.

A homeschooler can. That mid-morning UK slot is 14:00 PKT; the whole of our afternoon becomes available to a family in the UK, the Gulf or East Africa. Going the other way, 22:00 PKT is 13:00 in New York in summer and 12:00 in winter — early afternoon, useless to a schooled child and straightforward for one who is not.

Availability also changes the shape of the week. Four thirty-minute sessions beat one long class for arithmetic fluency and for language work, and that pattern is simply not schedulable around a school day.

• 14:00 PKT = 09:00 GMT / 10:00 BST — mid-morning in the UK.
• 15:00 PKT = 14:00 in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Muscat.
• 22:00 PKT = 13:00 in New York in summer, 12:00 in winter.
• Weekends from 10:00 PKT suit Gulf and UK families before midday.

The entry problem the plan has to be built around

A homeschooled student who wants a qualification sits as a private candidate: you find a school or centre in your country that accepts private candidates, register with them by the published deadline, and pay their fee alongside the entry fee. Cambridge International sets out this route explicitly.

That constraint reaches back into subject choice. Qualifications with centre-assessed non-exam components are hard to sit privately, which is why mathematics is the easiest subject on this route — it has no coursework at all — and why the international GCSE sciences, assessed by a written alternative-to-practical paper rather than by observed practical work, are the common choice where they are available.

So the plan runs backwards from the entry deadline, and that deadline is usually months earlier than families expect. We teach the content; we do not enter students. Secure the centre before the two-year teaching plan is written, not in the term the entries close.

Where it matters most, in order

Mathematics first, and not because we teach it. Maths is the most sequential subject in the curriculum: a gap in Year 6 fractions is invisible for two years and then makes rearranging formulae impossible. It is also where a home-educating parent most often runs out of road, usually around the start of proper algebra.

Science second, for the practical problem rather than the teaching one. The theory transfers to a screen; the laboratory does not, and the qualification route has to be chosen with that in mind.

English is a different case. The teaching is often the least urgent thing a homeschooler needs and the marking is the most urgent, because a homeschooled writer may have gone years without a single piece of work marked by anyone who is not their parent. That is a real deficit and it is fixed by regular marked writing against a published standard, not by lessons about how to write.

Quran and languages work particularly well online, because the medium is sound and correction is immediate.

How we work with home-educating families

We place by level and not by year, because 'Year 8' does not describe a homeschooled student. That usually means one-to-one or a pair matched on assessment rather than a group of four, and it means the first session is a longer diagnostic than we would run for a schooled child.

Every class is recorded, and for a home-educating family that turns out to be unusually useful: alongside the scheme of work and the marked practice, it is a running record of what was taught and when. It is not a formal portfolio and we would not claim it is one, but a family who has to demonstrate that education is happening finds the recordings make the case for them.
