Where 1200 actually sits

In the class of 2025, 149,767 students scored 1400-1600 and a further 357,574 scored 1200-1390. Together that is about a quarter of the two million who sat the test. A student at 1200 is therefore at roughly the 75th percentile — three in four test takers scored lower.

In terms of spread, the mean was 1029 and the standard deviation 235, which puts 1200 around 0.7 standard deviations above average. That is a meaningful distance, and it is also a long way short of the 1500s, which sit above two standard deviations.

So the honest description of 1200 is: clearly good, comfortably above average, and not competitive at universities that admit a small percentage of applicants. All three of those things are true at once, which is why the question keeps getting answered badly.

The split matters more than the total

Two students with 1200 can be in entirely different positions. One has 620 Reading and Writing with 580 Math; the other has 700 with 500. The second student has cleared the Reading and Writing benchmark of 480 with room to spare and has not reached the Math benchmark of 530 at all.

For a course that reads the Math section separately — engineering, computer science, economics, the physical sciences — that second profile is a problem in a way the composite does not reveal. For a humanities application, it may not matter at all.

This is the first thing to look at before deciding what to do with a 1200, and it usually settles the question of what to work on. The weaker section is where the points are cheapest anyway, because it is the one still containing unlearned content rather than residual careless error.

What 1200 opens

There is no list of universities that accept a 1200, and anyone offering one is inventing it. What exists is the published range for each institution, in section C9 of its Common Data Set, and 1200 sits inside that range at a substantial number of US universities — including many well-regarded public flagships and mid-selective private ones.

It also clears the stated threshold on a good number of published merit scholarship grids, which is a more concrete benefit than admission probability and is frequently overlooked. Those grids are worth checking before deciding whether another sitting is worthwhile, because the return can be financial rather than academic.

Where 1200 does not reach is the group of universities whose enrolled students cluster in the 1400s and 1500s. That is not a reason to avoid applying, but it is a reason not to build an entire list from that group.

Should you sit it again?

Only about half of SAT takers ever retake the test, which means a large number of students accept a first score that was never their best. The evidence on retaking is clear that it helps, and equally clear that it helps unevenly: the largest causal study of the question finds that students in the lower half of the distribution gain roughly four times as much on a second sitting as those nearer the top.

A 1200 is above the median, so the expected gain is real but moderate — tens of points rather than hundreds. What changes the arithmetic is superscoring. Where a university takes the best section score across sittings, the same study found superscores rise close to twice as much as total scores do, because a student rarely has a bad day in both sections at once.

Our advice to a student at 1200 is usually to sit it once more, having spent the intervening weeks on the weaker section only, and then stop. The first retake is worth about twice as much as any subsequent one, and beyond that the hours are better spent on the application itself.
