The centre is the whole problem

Neither Cambridge nor Pearson examines candidates directly. They approve centres, and a centre — a school, or an approved exam centre that does no teaching — makes the entry on your behalf. In the United States that means finding a school willing to seat someone else's child in its exam hall, invigilate them, handle the scripts and take on the administrative liability.

Cambridge is explicit that centres are under no obligation to accept private candidates, and in practice many do not. Pearson surveys its centres each year to find out which ones will consider external entries. This is not a formality that gets sorted out at the end; it is the first thing to solve and the thing most likely to fail.

Send the same short email to five or six centres in your state and the states next to it. Ask three questions and nothing else: do you accept external candidates, do you offer this exact syllabus and its components, and in which series.

Which series a US candidate can actually use

Cambridge IGCSE runs two series a year for candidates in the United States: June and November. There is a third, the March series, but it is run for candidates in India and is not an option from the US. Pearson's International GCSE runs a January series and a May/June one.

Entry deadlines fall months ahead of the papers, and the deadline that matters is not the board's — it is the centre's, which is earlier because the centre has to collect and submit everything. Ask for it in writing when you first make contact, because a centre that accepts you in principle can still be past its own cut-off.

Work backwards from the paper, not forwards from today. A June entry means finding a centre by the previous autumn, confirming the entry over the winter, and teaching to a syllabus you have already committed to.

What a US high school and a US college do with the certificate

IGCSE is a qualification taken at around 16, which puts it alongside Grade 10 in an American high school. It is not an Advanced Placement exam and it is not built to carry college credit. A US high school awards credit on its own transcript, so whether an IGCSE grade earns course credit or placement is a decision for the registrar at your school, made case by case. Ask them before you sit the exam, not after.

The Cambridge qualification that does carry weight with American universities is further up the ladder: Cambridge International AS and A Levels, and the AICE Diploma built from them, which many US universities recognise for credit or advanced standing. Some states go further and write the AICE Diploma into their own scholarship rules — Florida's Bright Futures programme is the one families most often mention — and that is worth confirming with the state agency rather than with a school or a tutor.

None of that flows down to IGCSE on its own. An IGCSE certificate is a solid, externally examined record of what a 16-year-old knows. It is not currency in a US admissions office.

When it is worth the trouble, and when it is not

It is worth it when the certificate has somewhere to go. A family relocating to the UK, the Gulf or a Commonwealth school system needs a qualification that system recognises, and IGCSE is that qualification. A homeschooling family that wants an externally set and externally marked benchmark — rather than a portfolio only they have graded — gets exactly that from it. A student already partway through a Cambridge programme should finish it.

It is not worth it when the student is going to stay in a US high school and apply to US colleges. In that case the transcript, the course rigour and the SAT do the work, and adding an IGCSE means a centre hunt, a travel plan and an entry fee for a line nobody in the admissions office is weighting.

We teach IGCSE Mathematics to students in the US and we are happy to. But if you tell us at the demo that the aim is a US application, we will say that SAT preparation is the better use of the same hours, and we would rather say it before you enrol.

About a year before the exam. The centre search itself can take weeks of emails and phone calls, and once you have a centre you are working to its internal deadline rather than the board's. Families who leave it until the spring for a June series usually end up entering for November instead.

Is IGCSE Mathematics easier to enter as a private candidate than other subjects?

Yes, because it is assessed entirely by timed written papers with no coursework and no practical component. The subjects that cause trouble for private candidates are the ones where part of the mark comes from work the school assesses, since there is no school to do the assessing.
